WZRD is offline, as is Democracy Now!

For the past couple of weeks, Chicago-area radio station WZRD (88.3 FM) has been off the air. The station, affiliated with Northeastern Illinois University, didn't file its broadcast license renewal (Illinois radio broadcast licenses were up for renewal in 2004) and the terms of its current broadcast license expired. As a result, WZRD is prevented from broadcasting, as is much of the progressive programming (including Democracy Now!) that WZRD airs.

WZRD is undertaking steps to get its license renewed, though it's unclear how long that'll take. It could be as soon as a couple of weeks. It could be as late as god-knows-how-long. If pressure needs to be applied on the FCC to speed things along, we'll let you know.

In Chicago, Democracy Now is currently otherwise airing on WLUW (88.7 FM) and WRTE (90.5 FM). In the meantime, we're cooking up plans to expand the reach of Democracy Now across Chicago. Those of you who have written or called us will be notifed of more details, hopefully as soon as this week.
