CHICAGO MEDIA ACTION ALERT, September 20, 2004 http://www.chicagomediaaction.org CMA EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH THIS WEDNESDAY AT CHANNEL 11 Chicago Media Action will do an educational outreach action at the Channel 11 studios parking lot this WEDNESDAY EVENING (SEPTEMBER 22), starting at about 5:15 p.m. If you can, come and help us distribute CMA's summary of its scathing study "Chicago Tonight: Elites, Affluence, and Advertising." And help us find others who agree that "WTTW11"'s owners fail in their public television license obligation to serve the underserved. The occasion is a 'star-studded sneak preview party' for the new fall season for donors who contribute more than $160 per year (The Producer's Circle). See www.wttw.com/fallpreview; we are left to guess whether the new season has a reformed 'Chicago Tonight' and avoids the new politicized right-wing news talk shows that PBS offers. The station event starts with Refreshments from 6:30 to 7:00. We will be urging attendees to read the full study at www.chicagomediaaction.org and to stand with CMA on the issues of the study. We will be done about 7:00. Maybe we will then adjourn somewhere for our own refreshments. Travel directions are at www.wttw.com/about. Allow extra rush hour time to get to the studio at 5400 N. St. Louis, in an otherwise residential area of the Northwest Side. Someone bring a digital camera. We apologize for the short notice. Come Wednesday if you can. And watch your email for future action plans. *** *** *** *** *** *** *** REMINDER OF LOW POWER FM AND CAN TV EFFORTS The remaining days in September will prove pivotal for other media-related political efforts, both nationwide and in Chicago. The Low Power FM initiative (which would help legalize hundreds more low-power community radio stations) is expected to come to a full vote in the Senate, and perhaps the House, this month. Read more about the issue and the latest political happenings: http://www.freepress.net/lpfm http://www.diymedia.net/feature/a1/a10904.htm We ask you to take a few minutes today to contact your Senators and Representatives. Encourage the support of the enactment of S. 2505, without any weakening amendments. The contact information for Illinois Senators is online here: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm?State=IL And be sure to contact your House representatives: http://www.house.gov In Chicago, the Stone ordinance to help fund CAN TV is expected to come to a City Council vote on September 29. If you live in Chicago, be sure to contact your alderman in support of the ordinance. Everyone is also encouraged to contact Mayor Daley to ask for his support of the ordinance.
